OUR STORY
Lerato La MoAfrika (LEMA) is a non-profit company (NPC) registered in South Africa in 2021 with the objective to redress South African past inequalities with regards to education and training, economic development, cultural heritage, and sports development among previously underserved communities. Inspired by Na’im Akbar’s book “Know Thyself” Which emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, cultural identity, and personal empowerment as foundational elements for societal transformation. By embracing these principles, LEMA seeks to empower individuals within previously underserved communities, fostering a sense of pride and ownership in their heritage and capabilities, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and thriving society for all.
The power of our cultural heritage and sport development for the youth in previously underserved communities has long been undervalued in society. Lerato La MoAfrika believes that heritage preservation and sports development for the youth is imperative for the development of society.
LEMA aims to redress the inequalities of the past, where previously underserved communities didn’t have access to sport and recreation as a basic human right.
OUR STORY
To be the identity of African community development through economic, cultural heritage preservation, sports development, education, and the authority on products of origin.
Sustainable change in the lives of African youth living in vulnerable communities through:
- sport and recreation programmes,
- heritage preservation programmes,
- social intervention programmes,
- economic development programmes, and
- community development programmes.
LEMA has developed The 2KP Value System, which the NPC utilises to develop programmes, identify partners and sponsors, and selecting projects to undertake.
KEEP – This is a principle that is derived from preserving cultural heritage with the intention of passing it onto the next generation. Programmes developed under this value system include South African indigenous languages literature, arts, and cultural activities. New products developed in South Africa are also aligned to this principle as they would be recognised under the “products of origin” programme.
KNOW – The organisation encourages the principle of knowledge rather than achievement in its education programmes. This principle carries the values of honesty, service-orientation, and dependability. This approach encourages learners to dig deep and have full understanding of subject matter before they can move onto something else. Programmes under this principle include education, religion, and personal development training.
PLAY – The play principle encompasses the values of equality, inclusiveness, collaboration, and respect. LEMA envisages achieving social cohesion through its sports and education programmes. The idea behind this principle is to encourage individuals to have more passion for personal development for the benefit of the collective. This principle is also a big part of decision making in sports and education programmes. Economic development programmes are also modelled around this principle with emphasis on collaboration and skills development in farming, agroprocessing, and storage solutions.
PRAY – Principled around the values of forgiveness, loyalty, responsibility and helpfulness, this principle assists the organisation in making decisions on various community development programmes. Programmes in this category include among others religion, rehabilitation, social intervention, and community care development
